School Dress Code
Ballet Classes

All female ballet students must have the dress or leotard and skirt assigned to their ballet class level in the exact brand, style, and color specified. The Sock Basket carries the school’s uniforms as well as proper tights, shoes, etc. Please be sure of your child’s class placement before purchasing dancewear. To help with hygiene and laundry if may be wise to have more than one leotard. Additional leotards may be identical or the same manufacturer and color but a different style. Replacement tights will be available for purchase at the studio if tights are too small, tattered, worn, dirty, or lost.

Do not wear street shoes on studio floors, or ballet shoes outside of the studio. All female students who have developed sufficiently must wear a bra under all leotards. Camisole leotards with flimsy straps or leotards that are too small, either of which require constant pulling up or pulling down are not appropriate for class. Leotards should have modestly high necklines in the front, and backs that cover bra straps.

Hair - Hair must be securely pinned up in a bun. No loose braids, pony tails, etc. are permitted. Bangs should be secured back if hanging in eyes, and hair pinned up off the back of the neck.

Tights and Leotards - Pink tights with feet and pink ballet slippers (and pink pointe shoes if necessary) are required. Tights should be “ballet” or “theatrical” pink and not the shimmery kind. Any solid-color, tight fitting leotard: no stripes, polka dots, or other patterns; no puffed or ruffled shoulders, bloused sleeves, attached skirts, high-cut leg lines, or aerobic or swim wear. Underwear should not be worn under tights and leotard.

Prohibited Items - Students may not wear any other type of pants, shirts, sweat clothes, leg warmers, or other extraneous or concealing garments during ballet classes. For safety, no jewelry is allowed except stud earrings. No food, drink, or chewing gum in the studios.

Ballet & Pointe Shoes
- Elastics (on all ballet and pointe shoes) and ribbons (pointe shoes only) must be properly sewn. Please allow us to inspect the fit of ballet and pointe shoes before they are sewn or worn. It often takes several tries and several trips to the store before a well-fitted pair is agreed upon. Properly fitted pointe shoes are a must for the safety of your child’s feet. Please do not buy "Russian Pointe" pointe shoes or Bloch Elastosplit ballet slippers (or equivalent).

Advanced Ballet - Any items worn over tights and leotards are at the discretion of the instructor and must be solid-colored and tight fitting.

Gentlemen - Please consult the director.

Adult Ballet, Modern Classes - Other clothes may be permitted or required. Please inquire if you have any questions.

G.b.2 Competition Division Dress Code
Tight-fitting attire is required for Jazz and Tap classes; no loose cover-ups. Hip-Hop students should wear tennis shoes (which were not worn outdoors) and non-restrictive street wear or athletic clothing such as T-shirts, shorts, or sweatpants that allow you to move fully. Instructors may prohibit certain items or deem certain items inappropriate as they see fit.
